I could not think of one particular favorite memory so what I did was combine all my pictures that I had from RCHS and put them together. I used the Friends theme song in the back ground to show how friends are always there for one another. I worked alone on this project.

The process of making everything was stressful but overall it was a good experience. My judge was very nice and did not ask me any questions so I guess that's a good thing in that I explained everything. I will defiantly not miss capstone!

VIDEO PROJECT

A PowerPoint presentation was created to stress the importance of reaching the youth and young adults of Dallas County.

Dallas County has the highest prevalence rate of HIV infection in Texas. In 2010 there were 908 new cases joining the 13,5000 residents living with HIV/AIDS. The rate of HIV/AIDS in Dallas County is about 37.3 per 100,000 residents.
Adolescents and young adults account for about 39% of all new HIV infections with 50% of all new infections occurring in people under the age of 25. These new infections represent 4.4% of the total HIV/AIDS infections in the United States but represent 9.9% of the undiagnosed infection.

Thus, to reduce this high rate of new HIV infections among adolescents and young adults it is necessary to address two critical area: education and testing.
Young people need to have appropriate education to clear up confusions regarding HIV/AIDS, the modes of transmissions, become aware of contributing risky behaviors, and the need for early detection and treatment. Limited health care access is also an issue among young people. Limitations include that some states require parental consent, inability to pay, lack of transportation, and confidentiality concerns.

This proposal addresses reduction of HIV Infection rate among youth in Dallas County. There should be a comprehensive education and prevention curriculum that is free & easy to understand, starts in school at an early age, and includes resources such as low cost & free family planning centers, youth peer groups, and availability of testing & referral.

A RNA HIV home testing kit is proposed, called GIT (Get Informed Get Tested). By testing for the HIV RNA this kit bypasses the long "window" phase so that people can know their status much earlier after a possible point of infection. The kit is easy to use, uses saliva instead of blood, configured for use by people with visual disability, results in 15 minutes, totally confidential, and available at no or low cost at various community locations.

Hopefully, if young people are educated on risky behaviors, have access to free & easy home test kits to test themselves and new sex partners, and have a peer support group the incidence of new infections among adolescents and young adults in Dallas County can start to decrease.

In addition to the personal devastation of a person discovering they are  HIV/AIDS positive,  there is a tremendous cost burden to the government. Congress funded $38 million for retro-viral medication for one year. The economic cost of HIV infection to the United States is $36.4 billion per year. The annual global cost of treating HIV infections is projected to reach $35 billion in the next 20 years unless there is a reversal in the climbing infection rate.

My presentation is about HIV and AIDS and the different types of transmissions. I will do this through an educational process that targets the ages of 13-19. The educational process will include modes of transmission, steps to protect yourself, testing, progression of the  Also, a prototype of an at home self-test will be introduced which tests for HIV by utilizing the presence of RNA.

PROPS: I will have a tablecloth, laptop-for my website and video, brochures, poster, self-test prtotype

website

I created my website by using Wix. I choose a template that was red and black and i thought that was a good theme to go with AIDS. I added pictures, videos, and data to site. I found using Wix to be easy because there were outlines from which to choose and I did not have to deal the the coding part of the website. I have not finished yet, but I plan on adding information on how AIDS is transmitted and my essay.

THINKING AHEAD

My planned visual aids include the poster with easel, a website, PSA, possible PowerPoint presentation, graphic charts, a handout, and a mock up of a model. At this point I am not sure if I will create a physical model or a 3D model on the website.  I may also include brochures from AIDS community resource centers. My handout will summarize the key points of the presentation and provide resources for additional information.
My space will be designed for visual impact using red and black. The poster will be to the side and forefront to catch the eye of a person walking by the space. I will creatively use my empty space on the table to support my presentation but will be careful not to allow it to become too cluttered.
To make my presentation memorable I will keep it simple and focused. I will state my goals and how I have achieved them. Graphic charts will be used to explain the prevalence of HIV/AIDS locally and globally and the economic impact. These charts will probably be on the website and may also be included in the handout. Then I will provide information on how my ideas and work can contribute to decreasing prevalence through education and earlier and more frequent testing. I will offer research in effective educational formats and new ideas for testing. In concluding I will restate the key three to four points and offer the person a handout.

Online research tips:
1.      Write a story that you can quickly share with your audience. Keep it simple, concrete, credible, and emotional
2.      Be totally mentally present and do not allow yourself to become distracted
3.      Ask yourself why does it matter and what is your goal
4.      What problems might you encounter and plan for them
5.      When creating your total design stand back and look if you have aligned your design elements, used repetition, maximized the visualization, and wisely used empty spaces.

1.      Speak with clarity, conviction, and impact
1.      Be aware of your body language – control hands and arms, assume a positive stance
2.      Besides presenting data the visual aids should stimulate and delight the audience. The visual aids should pull in the audience so that they are interested in listening to the presentation
3.      Your voice should sound credible and convincing
1.      Do not attempt to memorize all the material but know the material so well that you can do the presentation without the PowerPoint if needed. Use key words and phrases and include only the essential information so that you stay focused and keep the audience interested
2.      Be careful not to jump around in your presentation trying to tell everything there is to know about the subject. Instead use the Use the K.I.S.S. principle (Keep It Simple Silly) when designing a presentation. Stick to three or four points about your topic
